Professor Louie & The Crowmatix 20th Year Celebration Concert of Rick Danko’s Birthday

Professor Louie and the Crowmatix are at it again, this time with the Woodstock Horns, celebrating The Band member Rick Danko the best way they know how; on the Bearsville stage. This electrifying group plays over 150 shows a year, but this tribute to the Canadian singer, songwriter and bass player happens only annually on Rick’s birthday, December 29. This year is a little different however, and in lieu of a live performance we recorded the band doing their thing and will be streaming it on Rick’s birthday. December 29th at 8.00pm EDT

Rick Danko was born into a musical family in Ontario, Canada, and left school at age fourteen to pursue music full time. He played with a group called The Hawks who were discovered by Bob Dylan in the mid-60s, and the rest is history.

Professor Louie and his band arrived in the afternoon on Tuesday, October 13, to set up the stage for their performance to be recorded the next day. After all was said and done, the stage looked fantastic and was ready for music to be made.

Rick Danko found his way to Woodstock after he and his bandmates finished up a tour with Bob Dylan in 1966. Bob was already living in Woodstock, so Rick and the rest of The Band tagged along resulting in their days at Big Pink, a house in West Saugerties which famously housed the musicians as they worked on music that would later become The Basement Tapes.

Professor Louie is more than qualified to pay tribute to Rick Danko and The Band as he was a cherished collaborator with them for over sixteen years. Louie has worked with The Band as both musical collaborator and producer on albums such as Jericho, High On The Hog, and Jubilation, and on The Band’s hit song “Atlantic City.”

For this tribute show, Professor Louie and the Crowmatix along with the Scranton chapter of the Woodstock Horns performed some classic tunes by The Band, as well as some more obscure songs written by Rick Danko.

Joining Professor Louie on stage was the usual Crowmatix lineup consisting of Miss Marie (vocals, percussion, keyboard, performed with the Rick Danko band), Gary Burke (drums, played with Bob Dylan), Frank Campbell (bass, vocals, performed in Levon Helm’s band), and John Platania (guitar, vocals, played with Van Morrison). As a special treat, the Woodstock Horns also graced the stage, including Nick Driscol (saxophones, flute), Jim Buckley (bari sax, flute), Chuck Smith (trombone), and Dan Coyle (trumpet). To make things even more exciting, violinist Larry Packer, who performed with The Band at The Last Waltz, served as a special guest.

The energy in the room was electrifying, and we are honored to be able to share this performance with you. Click here to secure your tickets now.
